Reflective article and interview on Black History Month
Celebrating Black History Month is important for everyone, especially if we want to understand each other
by Cherie Mbanefo-5A1
First started in the U. S in 1926 by Carter.G. Woodhouse, Black History Month , originally called ‘Negro Week’ has been an annual commemoration of black history , achievements and culture . With the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement , it soon became a national celebration in February of 1976, with the U.K and Canada following in 1978 and 1995 respectively. In 2014, Ireland became the 4th country to officially celebrate Black History Month.
Before 2014, the celebration of black culture had been celebrated in regional , mostly urban areas by organizations such as the AIDI ( African Irish Development Initiatives) and the BHMI ( Black History Month Ireland) in areas of Cork and soon Dublin . Zephrynus Okechi Ikeh started the project of introducing Black History Month to Ireland to help ‘tackle racism and discrimination through helping people understand different cultures.’ And in the age of student activism as more young people get involved in politics, Black History Month has become a way for young people to understand each other and their culture and get away from the divisions that politics can form . This is especially true in Kishoge Community College in South Dublin where a committee of 6th Year students organised and launched the school’s first Black History Month celebrations. Following their main event, I interviewed one of the students, Kara, to learn how and why she decided to launch Black History Month in the school.
Cherie: So thank you for taking with me today Kara, so firstly what does Black History Month mean to you ?
Kara: Thank you for having me! Black History Month to me is a celebration of culture for me . It’s a way for all of us, regardless of your ethnicity, cultural background and such to understand and reflect on our shared history and each other’s backgrounds and be able to function together.
Cherie: Why did you think it was important for students to hold Black History Month?
Kara: I think that it’s important for young people to see representations of themselves and their background in their community because it’s not as prevalent to see that in the media. It’s important as we are all different, yes but we are all equal and it’s important that we know that.
Cherie: Do you think celebrating black history is necessary in this current age?
Kara: While I understand the controversy some may pull from it, I think especially in this age when race is such a dominant issue that it is important to celebrate Black History Month. It’s not a celebration of politics but of black culture that can be forgotten. It’s a celebration of our triumphs, not our oppression.
Cherie: How would you respond to the criticism that by have a month dedicated to one race that you are disregarding others?
Kara: I would say that if we didn’t have a month for black culture then it definitely wouldn’t be recognised at all. Black History Month is a month for everybody, it doesn’t matter if you are black or not. It’s a month where we can all understand and learn from each other. It provides a safe space to ask questions that you wouldn’t ask out of fear of being judged and I think that is really special, you know.
Cherie: I do know, so our final question and it’s a bit loaded; Do you think it’s important for students to celebrate Black History Month and if so , how would you encourage students to take action in their school?
Kara : Wow okay um , yes I do think that it is important as it allows students, especially black students to learn more about their history . I know myself that I learned more about African history than I ever have in our education system. It allows people to learn about history from another point of view and that we can learn more about our history not just Irish history. And for the second part of that question, I would say that I would definitely encourage students who are interested to take part in their own school. If you can get a teacher and your school allows it, survey students in your school and host your own Black History Month.
Cherie: Well thank you Kara for making time for me and I wish you all the best.
Kara: You’re welcome and thank you so much.
